Witherspoon

John Witherspoon (February 5, 1723 - November 15 1794) was a Scottish American Presbyterian minister, educator farmer, slaveholder and a founding father of the United States. Witherspoon was a strong advocate of Scottish realists of common sense and became a major participant in the formation of America's national character as the president of the College of New Jersey (1768-1794 and later Princeton University). A political leader, Witherspoon was a delegate from New Jersey to the Second Continental Congress and a participant in the July 4, 1776, Declaration of Independence. He was the only active clergyman to sign the Declaration and was the first president of the college.
