James Francis Cameron CC (born August 16, 1954) is a Canadian filmmaker. A key persona in the post-New Hollywood period, he is considered to be one of the industry's most innovative filmmakers, regularly challenging the limits of cinematic capabilities through the use of new technology. His first film was The Terminator (1984), which he directed. The film has since seen great success with Aliens (1986), The Abyss (1989), Terminator 2 (1991), Terminator 2 (Judgment Day) and True Lies (1994). He wrote and directed Titanic (1997) and Avatar (2009) which was a huge success, with Titanic winning the Academy Awards for Best Picture as well as Best Director and Best Editing. He has also been awarded various other awards from the industry, two of his films have been selected for preservation in the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress.Cameron was the co-founder of the production companies Lightstorm Entertainment, Digital Domain and Earthship Productions. Additionally, he is an official National Geographic sea explorer, and has produced many documentaries on the subject.
