Winona Laura Horowitz, born October 29, 1971, is an American actress. She initially was renowned for her unusual roles. But her popularity grew in the 1990s when she played more varied roles in films of various genres. Her numerous awards include an Screen Actors Guild Award, the Golden Globe Award and nominations for a Grammy Award and two Academy Awards. The actress also received the attention of Tim Burton's Beetlejuice (1988). Her performances in Heathers (1989), Great Balls of Fire (89), Mermaids(90), Edward Scissorhandss (1990), Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1992) increased her stardom. The roles she played in May Welland, a socialite, in Martin Scorsese’s The Age of Innocence (1993) as well as Jo March in Little Women's fifth adaptation (1994) brought the film critical acclaim. Other films she directed during this period were Reality Bites (1994), How to Make an American Quilt (95) and The Crucible (1996).
