 Tulsi Gabbard, /'tlsi'gaeb@rd/ was born April 12 1981. She is an American politician and United States Army Reserve officer. Gabbard was both the first Hindu member of Congress and also the first Samoan American voting member of Congress. Gabbard aged 21, was a candidate for the Democratic nomination for the 2020 United States presidential election. She then became an independent in October 2022. Gabbard was part of the Hawaii Army National Guard's medical field section, and served as a leader of a platoon in the Army Military Police. She also served in Iraq from 2004 to 2005. As an active member of Congress she was vice-chair of the Democratic National Committee (DNC) between 2013 and 2016, and resigned to endorse Bernie Sanders' campaign for the 2016 presidential election..
