 Disney is celebrating 20 years of The Lion King by revealing numbers that confirm it as the top-earning franchise in box-office history.Disney announced that the most recent total box office for the stage version is $9.1 billion (yes that's an b for billion). Add the film to the total and it reaches $11.6 billion. It is the biggest ever recorded for both a screen and stage title. It came out on October 28, the 20th anniversary of The King's debut in the London's West End. However, the figure does not reflect the earnings from the main films. Aside from the main films there are also other earnings like television shows as well as video games, merchandise and album soundtrack sales. The House of Mouse chose Julie Taymor to direct the production. When she was known for her work as a director of Shakespeare, Taymor created spectacular stage and costume. This week's London anniversary gala which was held in aid of Elton John AIDS Foundation & the Royal Academy of Music, featured the timeless story of Simba's transformation from a squinting cub to his destiny role as King of Pridelands on the Serengeti Plains.
