There are two core strategies to be an effective software company. Strategy #1 is the niche player committed to the development of specific technological functions, services or products. Strategy 2 is a platform player. It is usually larger and focuses on developing an extensive technology solution that acts as the data infrastructure for customers. While this may be an oversimplified generalization, it demonstrates how software vendors either aim to stay as comparatively specific specialists, or attempt to increase their presence through acquisitions and organic growth. It's rare to find large-scale software vendors that are focusing on growing their product offerings but prioritizing particular products in order to be better in what they do best. However, this situation goes a long way to explaining what's happening at Infor, a company known for its industry-specific cloud applications proficiency that is geared towards Enterprise Resource Management (ERP) and Supply Chain Management (SCM) tools.
