Jonathan (hatched around. 1832) is a Seychelles giant tortoise (Aldabrachelys gigantea hololissa) is a subspecies of the Aldabra giant tortoise (Aldabrachelys gigantea); he is the oldest living land animal. Jonathan lives on Saint Helena, an British Overseas Territory located in the South Atlantic Ocean. He was hatched in 1832 and was accompanied by three tortoises, each around 50 years old, from the Seychelles. He was named by the governor of Saint Helena Sir Spencer Davis in the 1930s and has had 31 governors. He lives on the grounds and is taken care of by the state. The age of his ancestors is known as he was mature when he arrived in Saint Helena in 1882. "Fully mature" is at least 50 years old which gives him a hatching date that was not later than 1832. The photograph of Jonathan initially believed to date from 1902 actually dates from 1886, displaying Jonathan four years after his arrival on Saint Helena. The image indicates that Jonathan was fully mature in 1886 according to measurements.
