Bettany

 Bettany Mary Hughes OBE, FSA was born on May 27, 1967. She is an English historian and writer, who specializes in classical history. Her published books cover classical antiquity and myth and the story of Istanbul. She is actively involved in promoting the teaching of classics in UK state schools. Hughes was made an OBE in 2019. In 2010, she delivered the Hellenic Institute's Tenth Annual Lecture "Ta Erotika - The Things of Love" and in 2011, she spoke at the Royal Television Society's Huw Wilson Memorial Lecture. She claimed that television history is growing and enjoying the new golden age. She was the chair of the Orange Prize for Fiction in 2011, the UK's only annual prize for writing exclusively by women. Hughes is a patron to The Iris Project which promotes teaching Latin as well as Greek in UK public schools. She is also an Honorary Patron of Classics For All, a national initiative to bring classical languages and the study of ancient civilisations into the state curriculum. She is an advisor to the Foundation for Science, Technology and Civilisation which seeks to promote large-scale collaboration initiatives between East and West
