A veteran (from Latin vetus 'old') is a person who has significant expertise (and is typically skilled and respected) and is an expert in a specific occupation or field. A military veteran is someone who has ceased to serve as a soldier. This is why there exists an abundance of knowledge that has been accumulated over the course of centuries of scholarly research that seeks to define, understand and explain their lives both during and after their military service. Griffith along with his colleagues provide an overview of the research area, which addresses issues related to veterans' general health, the transition from civilian life to military and homelessness, veteran employment participation in civic life and veteran identity as recurrent investigative subjects within the field.
