The track was first released as the first single off Carey's Merry Christmas album in October 1994, as per the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). It was a showcase of Mariah Carey's renditions of popular Christmas songs as well as new material she had composed with her co-writer Walter Afanasieff. The song quickly became a bestselling single. According to the RIAA, it remains one of the most popular singles of any genre of all time. It's also the top-selling holiday ringtone. In the US it was the first and only winner of the RIAA's coveted Diamond Award in 2021. The award is given after an amount of $10 million in streaming and sales.
