Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong form the comedy duo Cheech & Chong. They met in Vancouver in the early 1960s. Chong was a Canadian citizen, while Cheech was a native of southern California to stay out of the draft at the time of the Vietnam War. Cheech and Chong performed stand-up performances as well as released numerous popular comedy albums, and starred in a series of low-budget movies. Some of their best-known comedy routines and songs are "Earache My Eye", "Basketball Jones", "Santa Claus and His Old Lady", as well as "Sister Mary Elephant". Their most well-known line is "Dave’s not here" that they put out on their debut album. It was their debut feature-length film Up in Smoke in 1978. It became something of an iconic film and was also profitable enough in the box office (grossing more than $44 million, even with a modest budget)
