Bilbo Baggins is the main and the title character in J. R. R. Tolkien's 1937 novel The Hobbit. He also acts as a secondary character in The Lord of the Rings and fictional narrator of the majority of Tolkien's Middle-earth writings. Gandalf selects the Hobbit to assist Thorin and his band of Dwarves to regain their ancestral home and treasure that was stolen by the dragon Smaug. Bilbo starts out as The Hobbit timid and comfort-loving, and through his adventures becomes a helpful and resourceful participant in the quest.Bilbo's style of living in the Shire, defined by features like the presence of tobacco and a postal service reminds us of the English middle class in the Victorian to Edwardian eras. This is not in line with the old realm of Dwarves or Elves. Tolkien seems to have created Bilbo on the famous designer William Morris's journeys through Iceland; Morris liked his home comforts, but grew through his arduous travels. Bilbo's journey was described as a journey of grace in which the character gains wisdom and virtue and also a mental journey to wholeness.
