Bettany

 Bettany Mary Hughes OBE FSA (born May 1967) is an English historian writer, broadcaster and author, with a specialization in classical history. Her published books cover classical antiquity and myth as well as the history of Istanbul. She is involved in her efforts to promote the teaching of the classics in UK state schools. Hughes was made an OBE in the year 2019. In 2010, she delivered the Hellenic Institute's Tenth Annual Lecture "Ta Erotika - The Things of Love" and in 2011, she was a speaker at the Royal Television Society's Huw Wilson Memorial Lecture. She said that the field of television history is thriving and enjoying a new golden time. Hughes was chair of the Orange Prize for Fiction in 2011 which was the only UK annual award for stories written exclusively by women. Hughes is patron of The Iris Project which promotes teaching Latin as well as Greek in UK public schools. Hughes is an honorary patron for Classics For All, a national initiative to bring classical languages and the study of ancient civilisations into the state curriculum. She serves as an advisor to the Foundation for Science, Technology and Civilisation that aims to foster large-scale collaborative projects that bring together East and West
