Joan Blondell

John Elway enjoyed a remarkable NFL career. Elway threw for over 100,000 yards, even 300 touchdown passes, and was on nine Pro Bowl teams. He sailed off into the sunset as well; his last two seasons concluded with Super Bowl championships. Elway was set to retire as a Denver Broncos Legend. Bowlen also gave Elway the possibility of selling his stake in the team for $5 million plus the purchase price after five years. Elway also had the option to initially refuse to buy any additional shares in the team in the event that the Bowlen family decided to sell. Elway had already sold his John Elway Autos car dealer to AutoNation for $82.5million just one year earlier. That deal included an annual license fee which Elway was entitled to for the next decade. Elway was completely flush. Unfortunately, Pat Bowlen was later diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease in 2014. In June of 2019, he died. Over the last few years the team has been run by an organization known as the "Bowlen Trust" which has been overseen by Pat's seven children. It was difficult to reach an agreement when there were seven voices trying to influence the final decision.
